A MUNther’s day special?

May 11, 2008 by Ra's Al Cool

Sorta, but not quiet. It’s my first ever weekend post, so it’s special to me! You see, I just got back home from my other Job tonight/this morning and look what I found on VSsystem.com.

Despite the Infinity Watch affiliation that some of them sport, the Illuminati is not your traditional team. With drops spread throughout this set’s teams, through Modern Age and Silver Age, it’s going to be hard to find versions of the six Illuminati members that share the same affiliation other than Infinity Watch. So it should be very obvious that when you play this deck, you won’t be team attacking or reinforcing. Unless, that is, you flip a copy of Superhuman Registration Act or Underground Movement. Then, you’re fine. You also won’t be playing many team-stamped plot twists. That’s okay, because we’ve included enough legend content that it may not be necessary.

Did you catch that? Can you see my excitement? A new previewed card RIGHT. IN. THAT. PARAGRAPH!

Underground Movement! We know it’s going to be a team-up plot twist. That is most certain and having an idea of what Civil War was about, we know it’s a team-up card will team up everyone the way the registration act did. The only question is what’s it’s extra flavor? That extra… POW!!

If revealing the top card of your deck is just like revealing openly who’s side your on, would showing the bottom of your deck be the same? Would it be a real Bizarro.dec, play with your deck FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN? I say, probably not (although the thought is really cool). Could it be a Thinking Outside The Box 2.0 with a team-up attached to it? I can only dream and hope so until it’s release (or announcement) but I for one cannot wait!

What’s your guesses, what’s your hopes, what’s your dreams for this card? What’s your wants, what’s your pleasure, what’s your needs for this card to do? Sure, it’s two in the morning, but it shouldn’t stop that excitement!

With each preview (or ’semi spoiler’), this set seems like a must!

EDIT: The highlighted part is exactly how it is on VSSYSTEM.COM and is NOT the part to look at.

Movie Costumes!

May 6, 2008 by Ra's Al Cool

I hope everyone enjoyed last week. It was filled with free and cheap days of ice cream, free comics and even a Mario Kart event I forgot to mention at Nintendo World.

Without spoiling anything significant, Ironman was a fun movie and I recommend seeing it even though the Stark only drank ONE sip of alcohol and guzzled down what appeared to be a glass of grass juice. And yes, I counted. I just wish I could hear what was said after the credits… (the fans were LOUD).

The Macy’s on 34th street also has a few of the suits of Armor from this movie on display in their windows. If you live in or near New York Check them out while you can. No guarantees, but I’ll try to get pictures up as I believe I will be in the area tomorrow.

And speaking of costumes: Tomorrow, May 7th, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is opening up an exhibit on superheros! Costumes from various DC and Marvel Properties will be in the show as well as MANY from fashion designers. Although not listed, there will be a secret talk about the exhibit one day. I just have to find where I placed this four month old note…

Well, for those of you who are interested and plan on visiting New York, like for you know, a MEGA Weekend, check it out. It will run thorough Sept. 1st. It’s a fun little thing to view and it will only be around for a very, very limited time.

What are you doing with that WINE COOLER?!

May 2, 2008 by Ra's Al Cool

You know, I don’t even know if this is considered a wine cooler, it’s that… lame.

Today, I expect Tony Stark to be drunk 90% of the movie. I hope they don’t water him down. 8 P.M. showing, I can’t wait!

Crime Lords Month is a month too short.

May 1, 2008 by Ra's Al Cool

Well, I thought I would have time today to surprise everyone with a MODERN AGE CRIME LORDS deck, but I haven’t put it together yet unfortunately. Even though today I was home from work, it’s errand day (with still more to do). I’m sure someone has thought of this before and it has a long way to go. Here is the first draft of characters:

1 drop Winslow Schott <> Toyman x4
2 drop Black tarantula x4 pay 2 def, +2 atack while defending
2 drop Terra-Man x3
2 drop Natasha Irons <> Starlight x3
2 drop Brainiac 13 x1
3 drop Albert Malik<>Red Skull x4- boost pay 3, search for team up
3 drop Professor Emil Hamilton <> Ruin
3 drop bullseye x4 whenever stuns a defender, ko a resource ko that defender
4 drop Metallo x1
4 drop Atomic Skull, Cursed x2
5 drop Kingpin, overboss x4- whenever stunned stun adjacent dude
5 drop Lex Luthor, Master Manipulator x2
5 drop Lex Luthor, Metropolis Mongul x2

And the possible plot twists are:

Executive Privilege x4 - Searcher

Omnipitance x4

STUN 2 GUYS STUN THEIR ONE x4

TEAM UPS x5

FRONT ROW REVENGE Squad charters get+1 x4

That kingpin/Lex combo ALWAYS amuses me. Maybe I can update this soon.

UPDATE MAY 5th, 08: Some of the original idea doesn’t work, still double checking on the heart of the deck.

4.29.08 Hobby League Report!

May 1, 2008 by Ra's Al Cool

I just received a report on the Hobby league, so here is William Lee’s report:

The first round, I played Brian’s Checkmate Punisher/Omac equipment deck. I was confident with this match up if i draw my flying highs, duty calls, and indestructibles.

The game started with my opponent taking evens. He missed the 1 drop. Turn 2, he played Deadshot, dead aim, I played Hiro. We both took 2 and moved to turn 3. I played natasha irons protecting hiro, he fliped Brother I Satellite to search for a netralization protocol. He discarded an elemination protocol, played laser watch equiping the omac, tapped the Sat and drew a card.

During the combat step, I draw with hiro and grabbed a mobilize. Next I attacked with Natasha in to the omac and I play soaring. He takes 6, I pass. He attacks with dead shot into hiro and we both take 2. In the recover step I keep natasha and he keeps the omac. Life count is 40 to 46.

We move to turn 4. He plops down punisher, guns blazing and equips the amulet and helm of nabu drawing two and discarding some seemingly irrelevent cards(but i couldnt see the lighting was low). He then put a power gem(something he drew from the helm) on good ol punisher(just wondering how that works i could understand if he put a fate a non fate then another fate) but i bought it. For me, i changed my curve strategy to underdrop. I put a hiro and a krypto down. I formed an L with natasha exposed.

During the combat phase, he fliped a weapon lab then punisher attacked natasha. It was an interesting choice of attack. I thought about the cost of a card 10 life (i had a duty call but i was thinking of holding it to use for hiro) draw or stop the dmg all together i end it up drawing a flying high shuffled up my hand played the duty calls and passed.

Natasa went to the bin and omac attacked hiro he fliped brother eye and activated to give omac +3. I used flying high and took 5. 40 to 41.

Turn 5 started. I drew a flying high and and a savage  beatdown. I used mobilize to fetch superman, metropolis marvel as I could read that the double Elimination Protocol was coming. I played him and formed an L with superman exposed and passed. My prediction was right. He tapped netralization to bring back deadshot. He then stunned him and boosted out double elimination. He formed with the eliminations in a column the tapped netralization and punisher. I brought the attacks in i attacked punisher with krypto after drawing a soaring with hiro. I played my savage and only human(a bad move i think) and passed. Punisher goes down and the dog does too. Superman goes after the backrow elimination and bring the pain with savage and a soaring bringing superman to 21 attack. I pass. He attacks back elimination +4 with eye activation to hiro. Flying high brings the damage back to 6. Brian ko’s deadshot to recover elimination then recovered punisher. I picked hiro (making me feel bad about the too human). I was leading 18 to 33.

Turn 6. I drew a duty calls and pyrogen. An under drop from him: fatality, flawless victory. He payed a point to find the cloak of nabu and put it on punisher bringing him to a 11/11. Strangly he tapped netralization to bring back deadshot, he passes. I react with pyrogen and pass. He attacks hiro with fataility, i draw a soaring and play duty calls to just take 2. He then team attack with both elimination’s into pryogen i take 6 and he takes 4. Then, punisher into superman to take 5 he takes 4. Then i take 3 from deadshot recovery. I’m left with pryogen. He keeps both punisher and elemination score goes to 10 to 17

Turn 7 starts with me searching for superman, founding member and recruiting it. He played Sasha Bordeaux,Autonomous Prototype. Starting the attack phase, I attack sasha with superman playing soaring. i play duty calls on pyrogen with a savage and a power up to attack punisher to take 12 and passed the attack. His attack looked bleak as his guys failed to team-up with 4 attacker and pyrogen taking no breakthrough and superman negating the +2 from sasha he couldnt drop me to -13 and scoop ‘em up.

Looking at this game, i got lucky/he got unlucky and i pulled it out.

*Will, he made an illegal move. He recruited the equipments in the wrong order. Once fated, punisher could not add more. If he did one artifact and the gem(or vica versa), he could have continued the fate suit. Once he fated, however, you could have called against that.

Second round i played Adan’s F4 family of four deck.  It was a real bad match up for me as I would want my atk pumps over too human in this match. The card quality F4 has over Team superman was apperent. and the opening hand and mul wasnt good for me at all. The game was bad I dont remember what cards exactly he played, all I know is I lost because I had a hand full of chars and really couldnt mount any type of offence to keep the life close.

I picked evens, shiped my hand for a new 4 and it wasnt any better. Drew 2 got a plot twist to set. No play on the either end. On to turn two, saw another stall round as he played luke cage to my krypto.

Turn 3 I drew 2 characters and played natasha after he played invisable woman. He discarded for luke and passed. His attack was luke into krypto and clobering time i took 2. He drew 2 and put invis into natasha with a family of 4. I kept nat.

On 4, I draw soaring and superman last son which I play. He recruits mr.fantastic. I team attack mr fantastic and responds by looking at top 3 for a card. He takes 4. I pass to his attack step where he team attacks superman with a pump. I play flying high and he passes. turn 5 i draw 2 more characters. With wonder woman being the only option so far ive set flying high, soaring, pyrogen and maximum i set a krypto for turn 5 after he brings out Thing, heavy hitter and discards for luke.

During the attack phase, Thing goes after wonder woman but redirects to nat and reinforce. He however played reset and went after wonder woman again with a clobering time. I took 10. Luke cage with a pump deals me 4ish after stunning. He thinks about team attacking but passes. I go after mr fantastic with soaring he takes 4 i keep wonder woman, Adan keeps mr fantastic life count is me trailing 34ish to 44.

Starting turn 6, i knew this would define the game and after mr fantastic getting stunned, I belive he didnt have force field yet. I knew if i get 2 atk pumps to go along with the small swarm in my hand, I might be able to reduce his field. Despite my hopes, the deck craps out on me. I get superman, founding member and superman, metropolis marvel. I spend a good time thinking if i should under drop 2 guys or stand on wonderwoman and superman. Here was the problem. This is why this was such a bad match up, the characters that he will probilby drop, will stun back superman. Rather then drop to people and pass my attack, I felt that doing some dmg would be nice. I pass with wonder woman and superman in the front row. I see a grin as she hulk hits the board. I shake my head.  So, I go after mr fantastic with wonder woman. He digs top 3 and takes 4. hey things look ok, superman 12/12 goes after thing just hoping to do 5. Instead all i get is a tapped invis and a force field. The life 34 to 40 and consider packing it in but i do my buddy Adan a favor and play out she hulk with a pump into superman i take 10ish. The thing into wonder woman to take 7 life i keep wonder woman (thinking maybe a indestructible would get a laugh) 17 to 40 turn 7 see me getting a FTMWHE and a hiro. He “under drops” for human torch 6 drop. I know i lost at this point so i just throw out superman and hide wonderwoman behind. Pumps bring my board down and my life to -4

Will, thanks for the report!

Hobby League:4.29.08

April 30, 2008 by Ra's Al Cool

Came a little late, so I played off on the sides with other latecomers. Hobby league started on time for once. It’s been a long time since that has happened.

The meta in hobby league consisted of Hulksmash, Team Supes, Trinity, Checkmate army/punisher, FF4, and an Endgame deck. I think the trinity won and I might even get a tournament report off of one of them.

If you want to join our Hobby league or are in the New York area and want to play VS, email me and let me know!

Hobby League: 4.22.08

April 29, 2008 by Ra's Al Cool

I wasn’t there but our meta game consisted of: Superman, Torch stun, Insanity, and MK: Hulksmash! For tonight’s this week’s Hobby League, I’m still undecided as to what I want to play.

I am thinking I might be late considering today is Free Ice Cream Day at Ben and Jerry’s. Tomorrow at Baskin Robins is 31c a scoop day to compete (for more fun). Friday is Iron Man and don’t forget this saturday is Free comic book day!

Hush l’il Baby, Don’t Say a Word….

April 28, 2008 by Ra's Al Cool

I need to post this idea before it rotates out of modern. When I first saw that new Hush card, my brain started storming with ideas as it’s seemed as though it was such a great card. HUSH + HUGE ANNOYING TENTICLES = the w00t! Not only that, if your opponent attacked into Hush, it would still be an exhausted character, so his ability would still trigger. The question is what exhaustion and ready effects would make this work so that we can really clear an opponents board?

Well, I haven’t even made the deck yet, and find myself busy all the time. So here is a quickie from the top of my head. Pulling out certain cards will make it fun for modern (for the few months it has left), but I feel need for speed would be an essential in silver. Here’s a quick start.

  • Charaxes x4
  • Hush x4
  • Huge Annoying Tenticles x a lot?
  • Some one drops?
  • Chilly Reception x4
  • Wake the devil x4
  • Hunte Castle x2-3
  • Into Hiding x4
  • All Locked Up X4
  • Duty Calls X4
  • Some sort of Team-Ups x4
  • Birthing Chamber x4

We want to start the action as soon as possible and Huge Annoying Tenticles are essential in exhausting their board, that is why Into Hiding is there. Again, Need For Speed to attack twice if we went to silver, but cards such as the Fate artifacts and Fate Has Spoken can still easily fit in here too. Keeping it pure modern, I thought about Marvel Defenders, but I think that it might have too much clutter.

This however desperately needs attack pumps and probably a few nasty surprises. So, what do you all think? Any suggestions for a huge, annoying deck?

Casual Friday: FCBD Reminder

April 25, 2008 by Ra's Al Cool

Last weekend, I was unable to make the new york comic con due to prior engagements, but that doesn’t stop me from enjoying other comic book stuff! Next week Saturday is Free Comic Book day. This is an event that has taken place once a year for the past six or seven years. It’s a good way to get some favorites, or even pick up a new title you normally would not read.

Check out your local Comic Book store to see if they participate! HeroClix tends to give away free clx usually related to movies. Maybe one day a free VS card will be available to get the word out. Free stuff is always fun! Have a great weekend!

Gambit legend. Woo!

April 24, 2008 by Ra's Al Cool

As upset as I am with the recent announcement that puts future Batman, Joker, and Ra’s Al Ghul support into question, I am rather happy that within the same announcement that Gambit was declared to be a legend in the next marvel set after MUN. He’s one of two X-Men characters I really like, the other being Longshot.

I can go into conspiracy theories I have such as the two sets per year were because of UDE already knowing about the DC licensing problem, but then that is highly doubtful. Even though I always prefer the DC sets as a whole, I’m still highly anticipating MUN with open arms. All the previews have been amazing thus far!

I have a feeling that Shift is going to deal with moving into different areas and energize will be an activate ability that takes place during the recovery phase or something involving ‘pitching’ cards from the deck to use an ability. Those however are just my speculations and only speculations.

If a Gambit and Longshot team-up deck is possible, I will be so ecstatic.
